Marine allegedly involved in death of Massachusetts college student during weekend fight

A United States Marine was allegedly involved in the death of Emerson College student Daniel Hollis, who sustained irreparable brain injuries during a fight in Allston last month, according to the Marine Corps.

“We are deeply saddened to learn that an off-base incident allegedly involving one of our Marines has led to the passing of a man in the Boston community,” the Marine Corps said in a statement. “The event occurred during an approved leave period for the Marine, in the early hours of September 28, 2019. This is a tragic event and is being treated with great care and solemnity on the part of the command.”

Hollis, 20, was an Emerson College student and Hopedale High School graduate who was fatally injured after leaving a party with friends. His family said he was confronted by another group of college-age men and a fight ensued.

His family believes Hollis, who played lacrosse for Emerson College, was struck and subsequently hit his head on cement or bricks as he fell. He was taken to a Boston hospital, diagnosed with a blood clot, and underwent emergency surgery. His injuries were described as “extensive and irreparable.”

Hollis died on Thursday.

The Marine Corps said it expects the involved Marine to be taken into custody and will provide and update once that happens.
